Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging has long been in the purview of radiology and specifically the radiologic physician. In recent years, the field has evolved to become a first-line modality in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal conditions for non-radiologists physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors, and athletic trainers in a variety of different settings. With requisite training and with a good operator, this modality has evidence to become as equal or more accurate than MRI w/contrast for many different soft tissue disorders (1). Currently, there is little to no formal training in medical school, residency, and/or fellowships for the non-radiologists with an emphasis on becoming minimally competent in the performance, orientation, labeling, and documentation of musculoskeletal ultrasounds (2).
Additionally, learning musculoskeletal ultrasound in the post-doctorate or post-graduate setting can be extremely costly and distance learning or “E-learning” platforms are becoming more ubiquitous and prominent worldwide, especially in the face of COVID-19.
The Advanced Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Center aims to provide the learner with quality digital access to learning from a distance. We do this because there is evidence that the blended learning venue is superior to hands-on only (3), we aim to provide university-level information on a portable learning companion at a fraction of the cost compared to “in-person” seminars or university. It is our intent to give the learner every opportunity to become competent in the interpretation of normal vs abnormal sono-anatomy as well as image orientation, and potential pitfalls when performing and/or assessing musculoskeletal ultrasound studies.
